[Week3] Chandelier (lazer cutter)

1. Inspiration

Me and my friends use birthday candles to make a birthday more special. But it needs extra coast, and disposable. So I thought birthday celebrating decoration which can be used every year and for everyone.

2. Sketch 

I wanted to make a three layer’s birthday cake shape and also looked like a  chandelier.

3. Raw materials 

I founded wood board in the Junk shop.

  • materials: wood board, thin wire, glue gun, wood glue

4. Process

I set the printer setting as the guide but it was not cut, so I had to do twice. After two attempts, I did successfully cut at once from the third time.

3) Glue

The place where to glue is so narrow, it was hard to stick together with a wood glue. But a glue gun worked.

4) Connect three layers

That was the hardest part of this project. I tried to a thread but it was super hard to make a balance. Maybe I make holes in different directions to hold them tightly. I changed to use a thin wire and it was better than before..but still difficult to keep the center of gravity.

6. Conclusion

To lazer cutter, experiment of printing statement was really important because it is affected a lot to which material I use.

 

[week2] hanger (GUIDES, JIGS, AND REPEATABILITY)

  • Subject: Making five objects with same size and shape

 

1. Inspiration

It is so bothering to find a a hair band in a room. It is so wired, but it is so easy to miss them even in my tiny room and I have to get a new one. To solve my inconvenient situation, I decided to make a hair band hanger which I could stand it on a dressing table. 

2. Sketch  

I decided to make a tree shaped hanger with different hanger length and each arm slops away to avoid hairbands dropped.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 


3. Raw materials 

  • Materials: wood sticks from Home Depot and wood board from the junk shop. (I forgot to take a pic of the raw wood board)
  • Tools: drill, wood glue, tape, sanding machine, cutting machine

4. Process 

1) Cutting wood sticks 

I needed five bodies with the thickness wood sticks and four different length of arms for each five hangers. So, the total arms would be twenty.

To make the same length, set width of a cutting machine should be done first.

2) Making holes with a drill 

This step was the hardest one and took most of my time. To make a hole in the same place of the five bodies, I marked the distance on the clamp. It was not easy to make holes on the round surface, and I made many mistakes.

  • Each body has to have four holes for arms and They should be apart with 90 degrees. But for the first pancake, I forgot this and too much focused on drilling, I made four holes in a same row. Failed!
  • To put an arm into a hole, the diameter of a hole would be same with an arm of slightly bigger. It meant that I needed to use a little bit big bit to make a hole. Actually it was not a big size at all, but compared to the body size, it was pretty big size. Because of this reason when I tried with a proper size of bit, the drill was slipped and move to the different position. So I used three different size of bits, from the small size to the actual size. There was the second mistake I made. I used the drill with a different direction! That was why I had to flexed to my wrist and felt pain. After I did with the right direction, I did not even need to use from the small size of bit.

3) Grind the arms 

To put them into holes easily, I slightly made the edge of the sticks sharpen. The grinding of the opposite part was decoration.

4) Making stands 

To hole hangers, five stands are also needed. Luckily I found yellow painted wood plate in the junk shop, and cut and ground them. Then made  five holes with the drill.

5) Assembling

I put each of part together with a wood glue and slightly made an angle with arms.

6. Conclusion

It was so true that it will take 3.14 times than my expectation. I did not expect that just making same holes took this much and painful. I totally understand how much the setting is important to save time and work it done efficiently.

Another lesson I learned from this work was “Do not touch a drill bit which is just used!”. When I plugged out a drill bit and touched it, I got burned on my fingers. I did not know that it is so hot. Always be careful for fabrication even with a used drill bit.

 

 

 

 

 

[week1] flashlight

1. Inspiration

Luckily I had a flashlight, so disassembled it to see how the flashlight works. When I pushed the button, it pressed the metal band which connect the battery and the LED to the current could flow.

2. Raw materials 

I checked the junk shop to get materials and found this wood stamps. They were small, easy to bring, and made with wood, so I thought it was good for a body of a flashlight and good for practicing to use a drill. I got a LED and a pushbutton at the pcomp shop and bought a 3V battery at Lighting Plus.

– materials: wood stamp, sponge, cardboard, color blocks

– Tools: drill, drill press, glue

3. Sketch 

From drawing a sketch, I figured out I need three holes in the wood body. When I drew how to turn the light on, it was so simple, but when I thought about to put it inside of the body, it was a little bit confusing. 

4. Process 

1) Making three holes

One is for a LED, one is for the button and one is for the battery. Three of all should be connected for wires.  

Then, run into the fail! 

I did with a hand drill with different size of bits. But when I made a big hole, it was broken. I guess one reason was the wood was too small, and the other reason was the wrong way to use a hand drill. 

So, I tried again with the drill press and it was more clear way to make a big hole. 

2) Soldering & Assembling 

I soldered between the LED, the button and wires. Some part should be done after assembling.  

3) Design 

I filled the hole with a sponge and stuccoed a cardboard with a glue to make the surface flat. Then decorate it with a plastic little tiles. I used red one to represent the color of the LED.

5. Conclusion 

I wonder that the way of using a red and yellow drill is different. I feel more comfortable with using a yellow one, and a red drill seems a little bit different to be used. I also have to learn how to use a drill press again. After pressing down the handle I am not sure that I have to press the off button or press up. I did the both way, but either one seemed like being dangerous. 

The last one was about the soldering. I did it to the battery, but the surface was a little but burned, so I had to stop and used a tape. 

[Final project] Cat toy

Cats love to chase a moving thing even it is not a bird of a mouse. For this characteristic, there are some apps to catch a goldfish or mice for cats. And they love to play with them.

I do love cats, do love playing with cats, so wanted to give them more playful toy with physical interactions.

<Idea>

Cats love to sit on a laptop. Maybe because it is warm? We do not know the reason exactly but  they love to sit there and distract us when we do our work with a laptop.

In addition, cats are interested in the moving things on a screen. Even there is a lot of videos for cats on Youtube.

So, why not making a toy with a laptop screen?

It would be combination of p5js and physical computing. When a cat put his legs on a sensor, it might be a piezo or a pressure sensor, a bird or a mice will be shown up a screen. Moreover, some sensor will be connected to a camera on a laptop, so a cat could see his or her face.

[Midterm] PPAP Machine (Arduino Turntable)

 

Dominic and I did our midterm project together as a team, and we created a small and funny vinyl turntable using Arduino.

This idea was started when we learned about a wheal sensor in the Pcomp class a few weeks ago. When I came up with ideas about our midterm project, I remember the sensor and thought it would be fun to change that sensor like a vinyl record. I talked about this idea to Dominic and he liked this idea, so we just started our project from this tiny idea. We decided that Pen Pineapple Apple Pen as our song and developed our idea to a kind of simple game such as Rock Band.

<How it works?>

You input pen, pineapple, and apple all in the correct sequence followed by each of three LEDs are turned on. After you success to play the whole song, it is played automatically.

<How to make?>

We changed our plan of using a wheel sensor to using rotary encoders for the turntables, because we wanted to be able to fully spin them.

Dominic use the Arduino Mega because we need more interrupt pins more than two which the Arduino Uno has. And also interrupts are used Interrupts referred to the bildr website.

Dominic did most of the coding and I could learn a lot from him. That was an big advantage of team work. I also could learn a lot in a class, but also a classmate could be your great tutor as well.

Moreover, I did not know that I liked to solder a lot. Luckily I joined the help session about soldering a few days ago and it was a great opportunity to practice soldering by myself.

It was an also good chance to use a piezo sensor. It was needed to make a pen pad work.

This was a first attempt of a piezo sensor and a LED.

After it worked, I made a prototype of it. It was really excited moment when the LED was turned on flowed by hitting a box.

 

The biggest part was translating the song to codes and put them in the right sequences. Dominic found the video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3XXajtg0zKc, and transcribed them into MIDI notation using an online audio program. <Design>

I wanted to represent the song in the box design, so I choose to put leopard pattern on the box and two fruits on the records. Also, I wanted to make user experience design. That’s why I put the three LEDs on the top of the each records and the pen pad, and also put the reset button on the top to be found easily. On the side, the speaker was made with a just simple way, made holes with a small screw driver.

[Week8] Ren, social worker of New York (Final version)

 

1.What was your biggest take away from this piece?

I learned that a pre-shooting stage is really important as much as a real shooting. We really need a solid plan if we want to shoot and edit smoothly and efficiency. Steaven and I talked a lot, made a storyboard and also made option B for variables about the casting and location. We casted a person who we could interview a first, and also confirmed the additional location where we could deliver the mode of the video. As a result, the solid planning was really helpful for the time management.

 

2.What were you trying to say with this piece?

We wanted to deliver the complex emotion of working as a social worker and a alien from Asia in New York city as well.

3. Overall, how was your process?

1) Casting: We talked about what story we wanted to deliver and a social worker was fixed as a charactor because many people did not know what his or her role was exactly. Then we casted a social worker.

2) Storyboard: We created a story line and drew a storyboard. Also talked about B rolls.

3) Shooting: We checked the weather and the location, took a video in Washington square park.

4) Recording narration: We prepared the 20 questions including extra questions and recorded the interview with Ren in a quite room at NYU library with a zoom recorder.

5) Editing: We edited the video first as a storyboard and then did the audio. We found a suitable background music which was not distractive.

6) Post editing : After the class, we edited again with the feedbacks about the video. Then done!
