[Week8] Ren, social worker of New York (Final version)

 

1.What was your biggest take away from this piece?

I learned that a pre-shooting stage is really important as much as a real shooting. We really need a solid plan if we want to shoot and edit smoothly and efficiency. Steaven and I talked a lot, made a storyboard and also made option B for variables about the casting and location. We casted a person who we could interview a first, and also confirmed the additional location where we could deliver the mode of the video. As a result, the solid planning was really helpful for the time management.

 

2.What were you trying to say with this piece?

We wanted to deliver the complex emotion of working as a social worker and a alien from Asia in New York city as well.

3. Overall, how was your process?

1) Casting: We talked about what story we wanted to deliver and a social worker was fixed as a charactor because many people did not know what his or her role was exactly. Then we casted a social worker.

2) Storyboard: We created a story line and drew a storyboard. Also talked about B rolls.

3) Shooting: We checked the weather and the location, took a video in Washington square park.

4) Recording narration: We prepared the 20 questions including extra questions and recorded the interview with Ren in a quite room at NYU library with a zoom recorder.

5) Editing: We edited the video first as a storyboard and then did the audio. We found a suitable background music which was not distractive.

6) Post editing : After the class, we edited again with the feedbacks about the video. Then done!

 

Week3. Storyboard and lighting

Sentence: I wish you were here.

Jina and me expressed the sentence above with a four cut picture. We set a woman who miss her boyfirend who is not with her now. Through the first three picture, she looks very happy with having a tea with her boyfriend sitting infront of her. However, we could notice that she is actually sitting alone and imagined she was with him. We take the first three pictures in a close distance to her to make people imagine that there is a guy in front of her, and took a full shot to show the entire space in the last scene. A soft light was used for the pictures.

Week2. Sound project for Bloodchild

Here is the final result of me and Marco’s music inspired by Bloodchild. It is a sound college representing the story .

We collected various sounds with a recorder based on the story of Bloodchild and mixed it with Adobe Audition. A few of free sound library are used together.

It started with water sound. it was calm just like the silence before a storm and getting strong and mixed with the next sound. The tension has built up with the stretched song, closed door sound, footstep sounds. It goes to climax and you could listen the various of alarms and broken glasses. Finally when T’Gatoi’s eggs move to Gan, we express that scene, which is a  bit of sexual but weird, with animal sound which human being can not understand just like the relationship of them which is complicated and mixed emotions people could not understand.

Before we started to make a music, I did not expect that such a great music will be created from sounds existed without direct correlations each other. However, the result was amazing and it was great to work with Marco.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Week 1.

[Bloodchild] 

For making a short sound piece for “Bloodchild” by Octavia Butler, me and Marco, my partner and kind friend, met at ITP to talk about the book and the structure of our music.  The book was a short SF story and it was more than just fun. It contained many things which make me lost in thought. It was very interesting and also very clever . The role of sex was totally opposite to the real world, male became pregnant and female gave an egg to a man just like sperm moves from a man to a woman. This metaphor let us come up with many interesting idea for our work.

We decided not to tell the story literally, such as using footstep sounds to represent a scene that character is walking. Instead of a simile, we planed to express the story metaphorically with sounds tell atmosphere of a scene or tell story indirectly to make listeners imagine the story freely.

<Structure>

  1. T’Gatoi was lying on a couch and taking with mother of Gan: We felt calm before the storm.  (water sound)
  1. History about the relationship between mom and T’Gatoi. They were old friends and she introduced mom her husband : We will express their a little bit of unbalanced relationship.

3. Something sounds wrong outside. the cage was gone. T’Gatoi brought Lomas inside the house: Mysterious feeling

4. Lomas’s painful looking and T’Gatoi tried to let him give birth. Gan decided to help her: urgent, unexpected and surprised

5. Gan shoot a achti: afraid and scared

6. Climax: Gan saw a birth. (Lomas was devided and T’Gatoi picked grubs. ) :  horrible, gross, shocking, disturbing…

7. Gan and his brother, Qui was talking : tension, sad, surprised….

8. Gan decided to bear eggs of T’Gatoi to save his sister: sound of sacrifice.

9. T’Gatoi moved her egg from her body into Gan: we will express this metaphorically.

 

We divided the story about 10 structures and the duration for each parts would be around 30 secs to meet a total 3 min. But there is flexibility for each playing time to make impact on climax. Our music is an OST of the book and also could be played in a big space or a gallery rather than being listen before going to sleep.

There were a bunch of interesting ideas about what sounds we are going to collect for each structures. But I will reveal it later with collected sounds.

 
[Passing Stranger (East Village Poetry Walk) by Pejk Malinovski]

Walking East Village was really enjoyable experience. I have been there several times, but  has no idea what historical stories were in there.  This sound walk starts from St.Marks Church. Some places were changed, but it was  meaningful for me who came from outside of NYC to understand the historical meanings of East Village. However, I felt the historical stories of the place which is now filled with stores and fancy restaurants were getting lost as time has gone. It also happens in Korea either.

This activity made me also think about the expanded role of a sound track and developed form of a sound guide in the future. During the walking the streets, I felt like I was walking inside of a museum with a docent by listening explanation about art pieces. And I thought this would be one of the form of a guide tour in the future. Like invisible tour guide. It might be more fun to add some interaction if this sound track would be combined with other technology such as an application to allow people to have interesting experience. It could be an wearable devices where the sound comes from while walking East Village after 5 years rather than putting earphones on my ears. It was fun to imagine what a sound walk can do for a in the future and maybe I could do some project with this subject later.

Defining which is an influenced one and which is a plagiarism is tricky. That is why a plagiarism is a common controversial issue in various fields of arts. However, a plagiarism sometimes could happen even we do not intend to,  because we are influenced from a bunch of things such as memories, cultures and everything surrounding us.  And especially creators, they find references to be inspired or to just to refer their work. So it is hard to tell we literally create something from nothing.
We, as a creator, should not overlook the importance of a copywriter. The article and the video and also the discussion during the class let me think about in another aspect of influence. We need to check that our work is original with questioning to ourselves in different context. The other important factor is to protect our work. Sometimes I put a copywrite mark with my name below my illustration even though I am not sure it have legal force or not. Some portfolio website offer service for an artist to protect their credit. For example, when I publish my work on Behance, the site asks me that how much range I allow to people use my work. People could just scrape my work without any transformation or could modify for non-commercial use.
It was a good change to think about the originality and influence before we start to make our sound piece and also will be helpful for entire life as long as we are artists.
